Exemplary Teaching Award: The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church Exemplary Teaching Award

The Exemplary Teaching Award is presented annually to a full-time faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and colleagues; commitment to value-centered education; and service to students, the institution, the community, or church. All full-time faculty are eligible to be nominated for this award. The recipient is chosen by the last three award recipients who are still on campus.

The Fred L. Proctor Sr. Professorship

Fred L. Proctor Sr. endowed a professorship to honor a full-time faculty member appointed to the School of Business who has demonstrated significant contributions to business and the College community.  The appointment is made by the President of the College upon recommendation from the Academic Deans’ Council and continues as long as the recipient is a full-time member of the faculty.

Jefferson-Pilot Professorship

The Jefferson Pilot Professorship recognizes distinguished service to the College. The appointment is made by the President of the College upon recommendation from the Academic Deans’ Council and continues as long as the recipient is a full-time member of the faculty. Eligibility for the appointment is limited to those full-time faculty who have served for a minimum of 15 years.

Lucy H. Robertson Professorship of Religion

Named in honor of the first and only woman president of Greensboro College, the Lucy H. Robertson Professorship of Religion recognizes distinguished scholarship in religion and contributions to the College by a full-time faculty member who has an appointment to the Department of Religion, Ethics and Philosophy. The appointment is made by the President of the College upon recommendation from the Academic Deans’ Council and continues as long as the recipient is a full-time member of the faculty.

Moore Professor Award

The Moore Professor Award is presented annually at Commencement for the subsequent academic year.

The Moore Professor Award normally recognizes an outstanding accomplishment, or accomplishments such as the publication of a scholarly work, the creation or performance of an artistic work, a specific meritorious service to the College or recognition by a professional organization. All full-time faculty with academic rank are eligible as recipients except those who have received the award within the preceding five years and except those holding other named professorships.

The recipient is selected by a committee chaired by the President of the College and whose membership consists of the three previous recipients of the award and three students (the SGA President, the Senior Class President of the academic year when the selection is made, and the Chief Student Marshal of the academic year when the selection is made).

Outstanding Faculty Award

The Greensboro College Alumni Association has presented the Outstanding Faculty Award (originally the Outstanding Teaching Award) annually since 1974 to a member of the full-time teaching faculty. It is awarded based on the quality of classroom teaching, including laboratory, studio, or other teaching settings. Greensboro College alumni, faculty, staff, and students are invited to submit a nomination for the award (only one nomination per individual per year). The faculty selects the annual recipient from among those nominated. There are no restrictions to the number of times a faculty member may receive this award.

Virginia Clarke Gray Award

The Virginia Clarke Gray Award, established in 1994 by alumna Virginia Clarke Gray-Backus ’42, is presented annually to recognize an exemplary faculty member from among the junior faculty of the college. Only faculty who have taught full-time at a college or university for five years or less are eligible for this award. The criteria for the award are excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and colleagues; commitment to value-centered education; and service to students, the institution, the community, or church. The recipient is chosen from among the nominees by the Academic Deans’ Council.
